I believe in making timeless games that people will play and remember forever. Every game I make, I want it to be genuine, made from the heart. My goal is to fill people's life with fun and exciting memories through games, just like my childhood.

SumiKen development diary

SumiKen project started on August 2016 by solo indie game developer, OPNeon. The game is mostly influenced by PS2 game called Okami and Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The first time indie game developer had an idea to make a simple mobile game that would involve samurai and sword slashing action. As it's his first game, he decided to make the game's scope really small so it's possible to actually finish making it. He went on to prototype the game for about 2 months on and off after work, before setting it aside to take some time off from it. During October 2016, the motivation died off and the developer did not see the potential in the game and wanted to call it quit. It's such a slow paced game and not very exciting at all. Unfortunately, the development came to a complete standstill. On December 2016, out of the blue, the developer decided to show SumiKen to his colleagues, just to see what they think of it. Not surprisingly, they didn't seems to be interested in it at all, it's just a slow game with some placeholder artworks, who would actually like it? Being on the positive side, his colleagues did gave him different ideas on how to improve it. One particular clip his colleague showed him was the running scene from Studio Ghibli's Princess Kaguya. Instantly, it clicked. The motivation fired up and he decided to give the prototype one more chance. This time, the goal is to make the game fast paced, with the feeling of speed as shown in the clip. Fast forward to the the end of January 2017, the new prototype was completed. The game was so much better compared to the earlier prototype, it's fast paced and he felt great playing it. OPNeon decided to post it on a game forum to get feedback for his game, and he found Touch Arcade! The members at Touch Arcade are very helpful, constantly giving feedback and helped beta tested SumiKen. The developer is very grateful and appreciate their support, it's an awesome community there. For the next 3 months, the sole developer has spent countless hours developing SumiKen, single handedly coding, drawing, animating and marketing the game. It's a very intense development as he could only work on it part time during the night due to his daytime job as a technical artist in a local game studio. Most days, OPNeon worked from night till morning, 9pm till 3am, slowly developing SumiKen. It's a very difficult time, most days he felt sleep deprived and tired. But he had no thoughts on giving up at all, his only focus was to finish his first game! In the end, sheer willpower and passion made him finish SumiKen. It will finally hit the App Store on 11 May 2017! The developer, OPNeon, is very grateful for everyone who supported the game and helped him finished it, especially his family and girlfriend who gave him so much support and love during the difficult times. And now, the developer can finally sleep properly, for a while maybe. "Yay! I can finally call myself an indie game developer!" -OPNeon
